Memoth
Otter.ai Alternative

Otter.ai is Great for Teams.Memoth is Built for You.

Otter.ai works well for team collaboration — but if you're a solo professional, you don't need per-seat pricing or a notetaker bot in every call. Memoth gives you AI transcripts, summaries, and action items across iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch, with your library in your own iCloud.

Why solo professionals choose Memoth

Your Library Lives in Your iCloud

Memoth is not on-device transcription — audio is uploaded to be transcribed, and we would rather spell that out than imply otherwise. Your audio is then held for 30 days as an encrypted backup (AES-256 at rest, never publicly accessible) so a recording lost from your device can be restored, and deleted automatically after that. You can also delete any recording yourself from inside the app at any time. What Memoth never holds is your library: the recordings, transcripts, summaries, and action items live on your device and sync through your own private iCloud account rather than a vendor workspace.

No Per-Seat Pricing

One flat price covers everything. No seats, no user limits, no surprise charges as your usage grows.

Apple-Native Experience

Built specifically for Apple devices. Record on your iPhone or Apple Watch, review on your Mac — everything syncs seamlessly. The trade-off is deliberate: there is no Windows or Android app.

No Meeting Bots

Memoth on Mac auto-detects Zoom, Teams, and Meet calls and records locally. No bot joins your meeting, no awkward "Memoth is recording" alerts for participants.

WhatsApp Voice Notes

Send a voice message to the Memoth WhatsApp bot and get a transcript, summary, and action items back instantly.

Memoth vs Otter.ai: common questions

Is Memoth cheaper than Otter.ai?

For one person, yes. Memoth Pro is $9.99/month flat and Pro Plus is $24.99/month, billed to you rather than per seat, and there is a free tier you can start on. As of August 2026 Otter Pro lists at $16.99 per user per month billed monthly ($8.33 per user per month billed annually) and Otter Business at $30 per user per month, so the cost of covering a person or a team scales with the number of seats. Check Otter's pricing page for their current rates before you compare — plan prices change on both sides.

Can I record meetings without a bot joining the call?

Yes. On macOS, Memoth detects when you are in a call and records the audio locally from your Mac. Nothing joins the meeting as a participant, so there is no notetaker in the participant list and no notification telling everyone a bot has arrived. It works with Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex, FaceTime, or any audio playing on the Mac — including in-person conversations happening in the room. Otter's default path is the Otter Notetaker, which does join the call as a participant; its phone app can also record an in-person conversation from the device microphone.

Does Memoth work on iPhone and Apple Watch?

Yes. Memoth has native apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. You can start a recording from your wrist without your phone nearby, and recordings, transcripts, summaries, and action items sync across your devices through iCloud. You can also forward a WhatsApp voice message to the Memoth bot and get a transcript back in the chat. Otter ships web, iOS, Android, and a Chrome extension, but does not offer an Apple Watch app.

Where are my recordings stored, and is Memoth on-device?

Memoth does not transcribe on your device, and we would rather say so plainly than imply otherwise. When you finish a recording the audio is uploaded to Memoth's pipeline and sent to a speech-to-text provider (AssemblyAI) to be transcribed. That audio is then kept for 30 days as an encrypted backup — AES-256 at rest, never publicly accessible — so a recording lost from your device, or gone with a wiped phone, can still be restored. After 30 days the audio is deleted automatically. The transcript itself is kept for as long as you keep the recording, so it can be restored without re-processing your audio — and because that record is what lets us erase the provider's copy when you ask. Delete a recording from inside the app at any time and both are erased from our servers immediately. What Memoth does not keep is your library: the recording, transcript, summary, and action items live on your device and sync through your own private iCloud account, tied to your Apple ID, rather than sitting permanently in a vendor workspace. Otter is a cloud workspace product where your recordings live in your Otter account. If you record therapy sessions, medical appointments, or confidential client work, where the library of record lives — and how long anyone keeps the audio — is usually the deciding factor.

Can I move my existing Otter recordings into Memoth?

There is no one-click account migration between the two products. The practical route is to export the transcripts and audio you want to keep from Otter before you cancel, then bring the audio files into Memoth using the iOS share extension or audio import. Memoth transcribes and summarizes imported audio the same way it handles a fresh recording, so old conversations end up searchable alongside new ones.
